Fighting in Argonne : Butte of Vauquois. In place of the village of Vauquois, a lunar landscape riddled with huge deep craters 10 to 20 meters, separating the first French lines (bottom) of the German lines (top). Dominating the entire region east of the Argonne, Vauquois is considered by the staffs of the two camps as an outstanding observatory and a strategic bolt. Under the craters of the hill, about 17 km of wells, tunnels and branches, appointed by the French and German troops to house veterans and feed mine warfare, which reached its climax here: 519 explosions (199 German and 320 French ) there were identified. In the background, the Argonne Forest, whose forest formed a natural bulwark.
