Canon of all ancient Greek architecture, the temple of Zeus in Olympia was built by architect Libon in 470 B.C. The temple had a sloped entrance on the eastern facade (in the background). This was the place where the winners were awarded their prizes. On the western side, the big altar of Zeus where the famous 100-bull sacrifice took place on the third day of the games: the hecatomb. Only the foundations of the temple are preserved today but many vestiges of the building’s construction remain around the monument which was 64.12 meters long and 27.66 meters wide. The pediment sculptures are among Severe-style masterpieces. Inside the temple was the chryselephantine statue of Zeus, by Phidias, sixth wonder of the ancient world.
