// France - Loire valley - Indre et Loire (37) - Castle of Chenonceau : Aerial view from the west, at sunset. On foreground and in center, the Cher. On the left, the garden of Catherine de Medicis, the forecourt, the tower of Marques and the garden of Diane de Poitiers. On background left, the slopes of the village of Chenonceaux. Built on the plans of a Venetian palace in the sixteenth century, Chenonceau Castle, with five arches spanning the Cher River, is the only bridge-castle in the world. Nicknamed the Ladies' Castle, its history has been marked, among others, by five women, great seductresses or women of power: Diane de Poitiers (1499 - 1566), Catherine de Medici (1519 - 1589), Louise de Lorraine ( 1553 - 1601), Gabrielle d'Estrées (1573 - 1599) and Louise Dupin (1706 - 1799).
