Abeid Mahmoud, from the IFAO restauration lab (far left) cleans and restores the figures of the painted façade. Made from natural pigments, the original colors were applied to a high-quality limestone of Toura, which explains their nearly pristine condition. To seal the colors, the restorer uses chemicals which protect the colors from the three ‘plagues’ of deterioration: light, humidity and oxygen.
