Site 9: Bayeux, arrival of General de Gaulle, June 14, 1944. A few days after the Normandy landings, de Gaulle wanted to symbolically set foot on his native soil to meet the French in the first liberated cities. He also wanted to thwart U.S. intentions to create a European currency under their influence. De Gaulle gave a major speech before going for the first time in the United States to meet French scientists working on the nuclear force, and President Franklin Roosevelt. The enthusiasm of the population confirmed the legitimacy of his fight and dissuaded the United States to place France under their administration (AMGOT). This was the first step of de Gaulle to form a provisional government after the Liberation.
