Site 12 : Pegasus Bridge - Bénouville - First bridge and first town liberated. A replica Horsa glider. The "Coup de main " operation (in french in the text) was to take possession of Bénouville bridge (later called Pegasus Bridge) under the Tonga operation by the 6th British Airborne Division. Under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Richard Geoffrey Pine-Coffin's 7th airborne infantry battalion and Brigadier Nigel Poett of 5th British Airborne Brigade, Major John Howard landed with three Horsa gliders at 0 h 20. Major Howard led 180 men with whom he took the Pegasus Bridge. The company's headquarters and the 7th Battalion managed to hold the two bridges despite the attacks against German and many losses.
