Aerial view of the Peter and Paul Fortress. Its construction in 1703,
decided on by Peter the Great, is St Petersburg's birth certificate. The
first wooden citadel was replaced with stone according to Italian architect
Domenico Trezzini's plans. At the center of the fortress, the Saint Peter
and Saint Paul Cathedral. In the background from left to right: the Strelka
(the tip) of Vassilievski Island with the Marine Museum and the Rostral
Columns, Petrograd, the city's first neighborhood also founded in 1703.
