Site 5: German Battery of Longues sur Mer is one of the most iconic gun batteries of the Atlantic Wall. The site included 4 naval guns of 150 mm long range, each protected by a bunker in reinforced concrete, and various facilities to serve and defend. Located between Omaha Beach and Gold Beach, the battery was subjected to intense aerial bombardment and naval preventing it from fully activated on D-Da,y and the next day was taken by British troops. In a good state of preservation and in a developed site, it is a popular place to stay when visiting the landing sites. It is from the advanced casemate of Longues sur Mer (photo 39) that the German discovered, in the early morning of June 6, the arrival of the the impressive armada from the sea. This episode is staged in the American film " The Longest Day ", produced by the American Darryl Zanuck (photo 40).
