Site 4: Gold Beach - Remains of artificially harbour B (for British) at Arromanches les Bains. The Mulberry harbor was built to supply the Allied armies in the days following the Normandy landings. In fact, two ports were assembled off the beaches of Calvados, but only one, at Arromanches has been operational, the second, in Omaha Beach, being destroyed by a storm June 19, 1944. The construction of this port to the Allies avoided having to take a deep water port directly. The Mulberry harbor was constructed of various large prefabricated elements in England, routed and mounted on the Normandy coast. This artificial harbor has often been put forward as having ensured the success of the Battle of Normandy and presented as an example of logistics and military engineering.
