History remembers the nickname of "Bloody Omaha" as famous movies like The Longest Day or Saving Private Ryan staged . Eight kilometers long, the landing zone extended from Sainte Honorine des Pertes in the east to Vierville sur Mer on the west. The goal was to capture Omaha and then to hold a bridgehead five miles deep between Port en Bessin and the Vire and as soon as possible, to the junction with the east British and west with the U.S. VII Corps landing at Utah Beach to establish a beachhead on the Normandy coast continues.
