The Winter Palace and the Hermitage Museum, south façade. Built for the
tzarina Elizabeth, this sumptuous residence is one of the most beautiful
works of architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli (1700-1771). The construction, which
began in 1754 and ended in 1768 is a superb example of Russian Baroque style.
In the background , the Strelka (the tip) of Vassilievski Island with the
Marine Museum and the Rostral Columns.
