Vassilievski Island, university banks. Two sphinxes sit in front of the
Academy of Fine Arts. Discovered in the ruins of Thebes, capital of ancient
Egypt, they were installed here in 1832. They date back to the 14th Century
B.C., under the reign of Pharaoh Amenopolis III who would have served as a
model for the head. In the background, the Admiralty banks and Saint Isaac's
Cathedral.
