Battle of Hartmanswillerkopf (Hill of the Old Armand): Remains of the French trenches of the front lines, close to summit. In the background, the Grand Ballon and the crest of the Vosges (then French territory). Strategic position overlooking the plain of Alsace, east of the Vosges, about 300,000 men fought here to win (for French) or defend (for German) Alsace region. Approximately 50,000 people are dead or missing and 12,000 French soldiers are buried unknown in the crypt of the National Monument (pictures 239 and 240).
