Fighting in Argonne : American Cemetery of Romagne sous Montfaucon. It is the largest American cemetery in Europe, with its graves of 14,246 soldiers and 954 missing, in latin cross (or stars of David) of white marble, in a landscaped park of 52 hectares, situated on the two slopes of a valley (for the record, the American cemetery at Colleville contains the graves of 9,387 soldiers and 1,557 missing). Most of the soldiers buried here fell during the Meuse-Argonne offensive, which began September 26, 1918 (General Pershing). This pushed the German army in the final defeat and the signing of the Armistice of November 11. Left, the village of Romagne sous Montfaucon.
