Wagon de l'Armistice, à Compiègne (Rethondes). La fin de la première guerre mondiale est signée le 11 novembre 1918, à 5 heures du matin, dans un wagon transformé en bureau, près de la gare de Rethondes. Le maréchal Foch, généralissime des armées alliées et le général Weygand reçoivent la capitulation de la délégation allemande envoyée par la toute nouvelle république de Weimar. Le cessez-le-feu général prendra effet 6 heures plus tard. Dès 1922, la clairière de l’Armistice est aménagée par l’architecte Mages en un vaste rond-point précédé d’une allée de 250 m de long. Une statue du Maréchal Foch y est érigée. L'exacte réplique du wagon utilisé pour la signature de l’armistice (l'original fut détruit par Hitler en 1944) est installé dans le musée (visible en haut à gauche) créé en 1927.

Glade of the Armistice at Compiègne (Rethondes). The end of the First World War was signed on 11 November 1918, at 5:00 am, in a wagon transformed into an office near the railway station of Rethondes. Marshal Foch, french chief of the allied armies and general Weygand receive the surrender of the German delegation sent by the new Weimar Republic. The general cease-fire take effect six hours later. In 1922, the Glade of the Armistice is set up by the architect Mages in a large roundabout preceded by a path of 250 m long. A statue of Marshal Foch is erected. The exact replica of the wagon used for the signing of the armistice (the original was destroyed by Hitler in 1944) is installed in the museum, which was created in 1927.
