Glade of the Armistice at Compiègne (Rethondes). The end of the First World War was signed on 11 November 1918, at 5:00 am, in a wagon transformed into an office near the railway station of Rethondes. Marshal Foch, french chief of the allied armies and general Weygand receive the surrender of the German delegation sent by the new Weimar Republic. The general cease-fire take effect six hours later. In 1922, the Glade of the Armistice is set up by the architect Mages in a large roundabout preceded by a path of 250 m long. A statue of Marshal Foch (up left) is erected. The exact replica of the wagon used for the signing of the armistice (the original was destroyed by Hitler in 1944) is installed in the museum, which was created in 1927.
