Battle of Artois: Vimy Ridge, Canadian National Historic Site. The no man's land of the front line (center), is still riddled with craters due to mine warfare and shrapnel. Left, the trenches of the first Allied lines. Right, the first German trench lines. Between the two, about 25 meters. After an assault launched on 9 April 1917, the troops with the maple leaf, met for the first time in a non British single corps, wins Vimy Ridge, marking a major chapter in the history of the Canadian nation. The Vimy ridge is forested today (background): Each tree was planted by a Canadian and symbolizes the sacrifice of a soldier.
