Reichstag and Bundestag. The wall's route lay along the eastern side of the Reichstag. Consequence of the reunification of Germany on 3 October 1990, the Bundestag (Federal Parliament of Germany) decided, a year later, to the Reichstag parliament building in Berlin, the restored capital of reunited Germany. After a complete restoration of the original building of 1894, the Bundestag meets in this place April 19, 1999, in a spectacularly restored building by Norman Foster. The Reichstag was plagued by damage and destruction during the 20th century. After reunification and the transfer of the Bundestag from Bonn to Berlin, it became necessary to equip and modernize the building down languishing. Architect Sir Norman Foster was commissioned to complete the mammoth project of transformation, including the now famous glass dome. The official reunification of Germany was celebrated here October 2, 1990. More recently, during the summer of 1995, Berliners and visitors from around the world flocked to enjoy the experience of the wrapping of the Reichstag by the artist Christo. The magical event lasted two weeks as a final farewell before the start of restoration work.
